What is LNG?
Natural gas, which comes out of deep wells, is
a
mix of hydrocarbons of which approximately 80/90% is methane, and the
rest ethane, propane and heavier hydrocarbons.
To facilitate transportation by ship, this gas can be subjected to a
liquefaction process. The liquefaction temperature of the natural gas is
around -160°C at atmospheric pressure. The resulting product is called
liquefied natural gas (LNG).
LNG is a colourless and odourless fluid with a density around half that
of water. Its composition depends, of course, on the composition of the
natural gas prior to liquefaction, with the only difference that the
liquefaction process also involves a purification phase. |
