Informative note
In consideration of the fact that any type of industrial plant will have a life cycle during which it operates under optimum conditions, GNL Italia has launched the process of authorisation of a project to modernise and upgrade its liquefied natural gas regasifying plant in Panigaglia (SP).
The project to modernise and upgrade the Panigaglia power station does not involve occupying new land. The perimeter and the size of the area will remain as they are now.
There will be no industrialisation of new land and there will be no changes made to the landscape, since the two new tanks will be partially buried.
The existing infrastructures and utilities will be used (e.g. the access roads).
All interventions will be contained within the existing perimeter.
The modernisation of the LNG plant in Panigaglia is a further guarantee of safety. The project involves installing the most advanced technology to guarantee the best levels of performance.
For example, the partially-buried tanks are totally double-containment, with external walls and roof in precompressed reinforced cement.
The process of obtaining authorisation to modernise and upgrade the Panigaglia plant will be observed to the letter by GNL Italia, as will the process of consultation with national and local institutions. The notice published on 19 June 2007 in the Italian daily newspapers
Il Corriere della Sera, Il Secolo XIX and La Nazione marks the beginning of this process and certifies that GNL Italia has presented its application to:
-
The Ministry for the Environment and Protection of the Territory and the Seas
-
The Ministry for Cultural Heritage and Activities
-
The Ministry for Economic Development
-
The Liguria Region (responsible for acquiring the opinions of other local bodies).
The modernisation and upgrading of the Panigaglia plant, in addition to ensuring the highest standards of safety and operational efficiency, will contribute to increasing the methanisation and flexibility of supplying natural gas in Italy, in consideration of the projected increase in demand for gas in the peninsula in the near future. This project will also improve the diversification and safety of energy supplies in Italy.
